After reading Thomas L- Friedman's book on globalisation and his more recent book, first published 2008 published, "The World is hot, flat and crowded", dt.: Was zu tun ist. Eine Agenda für das 21. Jahrhundert " I have started to read another of Friedman's older work titled "The World is flat" from 2005.
In his introductory chapter "While I was sleeping" (Friedman, 205, 3-47) he outlines how he came to the conclusion that the world is really flat. Here is a video clip by Friedman on how he came to write this book. [....more on our course blog]

[Friedman, 2010, 14]. Friedman sagte in einem Interview mit Fareed Zakaria: "You're absolutely right--it is about two things. The book says, America has a problem and the world has a problem. The world's problem is that it's getting hot, flat and crowded and that convergence--that perfect storm--is driving a lot of negative trends. America's problem is that we've lost our way--we've lost our groove as a country. And the basic argument of the book is that we can solve our problem by taking the lead in solving the world's problem." [Thomas Friedman and Fareed Zakaria: Author One-to-One]

An important Moment in History - Obama is the 44th President
The American People have spoken. Barak Obama is the new President of the Unitet States and the first Black President. 40 years after Martin King's Assassination some of his dreams have come true. "As the new day dawns in Germany, America is once again dreaming the American dream. It will be a deep, soulful dream after all these restless, dreamless years of terror attacks, reports from the Baghdad front and the collapse of Wall Street. It's a dream about a world without poverty or fear, of a life full of opportunity and devoid of George W. Bush", writes Gabor Steiner in The Resurrection of the American Dream in Spiegel Online International. Here is his Victory speech.

The American Dream still goes on.......
The recent crisis in the financial world has again triggered the question - and, of course, criticism - of America's leading role in the world and the American Dream. According to Matthias Nass (cf. "Verrat am amerikanischen Traum", in: Die ZEIT No 41, Oct 1, 2008, 4.) we all are involved in this crisis. (Ebd. 4) This dream which is also our dream has been dammaged and betrayed by Bush Administration. And we have to pay the price now. [See also: Jann Ross, "Helden des Rückzugs", in: Die ZEIT N0 41, Oct. 1, 2008, 4]
Michael Nauman doubts (cf. "Der amerikanische Traum" in: Die ZEIT (Nr. 41, 1. Okt.2008, 49f), that the United States and the promise of freedom, individual rights and the pursuit of happiness will be destroyed by the eight years under George Bush and by the current financial crisis . This dreams still exists in at least six different varieties, the oldest being written in the very document which declares America's independence asn well as in the Constitution from 1793.
The second dream , he continues, lays virtually behind the natural borders of the first frontier - the West which promised a new adventure of freedom and individual happiness, a dream which was voiced and symbolized by John Gast's painting Manifest Destiny. Within some 100 years thousand of settlers conquered and tamed this vast continent and thus laid the foundation of the modern political, economic and technological superpower. The West proved t be second challenge for a young and strong nation, whose people thought - and still think - that everything is possible. It is the area where America can regenerate and rejuvenate itself again and again as that famous hero Natty Bumppo in James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking tales, although the price was paid by the genocide of Native Americans and African Slaves.
The third aspect of this dreams lies in the promise of unlimited opportunities where everyone can become rich, a governor or even get into the White House. (Ebd. 50)
Dream No 4 and 5 seem to have been destroyed or have become nightmare - from America's defeat in Vietnam to Bush's war in Iraque and the small happy dream of evey citizen owning his own house.
The last probably the most important dream is the belief of leading politician and intellectuals, so Michael Nauman, in the power of regeneration in the spirit of those people who once framed the Constitution. (Ebd. 50 ). As Al Gore once stated druing his campaign fpr presidency: What makes America strong is the belief in its values dan tradtitions.

Barak Obama in Berlin
Barak Obama the designated candidate for this year's presidentila elcetion gave his controversially discussed speech in Berlin yesterday [see photogalery]. "Nevertheless he chose well when he picked Berlin for the announcement of his grand vision of the world. Berlin is the world capital of the bold speech. Since the end of World War II Berlin has been American politicians' equivalent of Hyde Park's Speakers Corner in London, where anyone can get up on a soapbox and speak. In Berlin it is the great and mighty who make speeches, and as well as, recently, those who have yet to prove their greatness", comments Gabor Steingart. [more....]

Barak Obama on Racism
Many people see Barak Obama already as the new President of the United States. Having been critized for being in contact with Reverend Jeremiah Wright who still preaches against white Amerika Obama gave a what will probably go down as a historical speech on the issues of race in Philadelphia on March 18, 2008. He has told the story of his race as a story of wrath and anger (see Peter Kümmel, Ein Mann, dem Zorn enstiegen, in: DIE ZEIT Nr. 14, 27. März 2008, 49). Here is his speech.

Nobel Peace Prize for Al Gore
Al Gore was awarded the Peace Nobel Prize 2007. As former Vice President in the Clinton Administration and Presidential Candidate in the Presidential Race 2000 he has returned on the political stage with his highly acclaimed documentary An Inconvenient Truth on Global
warming. Fitz Vorholz comments this in the German weekly"Die Zeit" as a defeat for George W. Bush and victory for the UN Council on Climate change. See also the comment by Karsten Polke-Majewski: Ein bisschen Show muss sein. He also seems back as a potential candidate for the next presendetial campaign.

"The World has gone mad again" - War in the Middle East.
The World has gone mad again, not enough trouble in Afghanistan, in Iraque and elsewhere. For weeks now Israel has been attacking Lebanon to fight Hisbollah in self-defense, who continues to attack Israelian cities with missiles. Innocent people on both sides are suffering. And peace in the region seems to be out of sight for generations. People here in Germany - like me - are puzzled, shocked and confused about so much hate on both sides. Of course, we have a historic responsibility towards Israel, but I also think that war is never a solution. Everyday we hear on the news about attacks, killings and deaths of innocent people, especially children. And I have always asked myself, maybe a bit naive why people just can't live together and grant each other the right of life and existence.
I read in the German weekly "Die Zeit" (Nr. 31, July 27, 2006, 2) an article about how young people in Lebanon try to cope with this difficult situation by writing ahout the war in their weblogs. Here are some weblogs One is from Eve, a translator in Beirut, from Nadche , a franco-lebanese student, Zena, an artit from Beirut, or the weblog of a blogger named "ramzi". Check them out.

Könnte man doch mal überprüfen?
